People fleeing war in Ukraine and arriving in Slovakia with granted temporary refuge status, most often inquire if they can lose their status, or what to do if they encounter a problem while crossing the border to another country to visit their homes or relatives.

This results from data of the IOM Migration Information Centre (MIC), which provides Ukrainian citizens as well as non-European Union (EU) nationals with remote legal, social and job counselling and referral to relevant services through both email and helplines.

Among the first people they meet in Slovakia at border points of entry, large-scale registration centres, accommodation centres and hotpots, that can provide them with important information and take action are IOM Slovakia staff members. To date, IOM provided over 3,840 people fleeing war in Ukraine with immediate in person assistance and vital information on temporary refuge and how to apply for it, with counselling on services, residence, travel, social protection system, or jobs in Slovakia.

It is of vital importance that IOM also raises awareness of people fleeing war in Ukraine about the risks of human trafficking. In addition, IOM provides them info lines and contact details for further questions and situation that may arise during their stay in Slovakia.

Since the outbreak of the war, with the growing number of war-affected people forced to leave their home and arriving to Slovakia, the number of people who benefited from MIC free services and counselling has multiplied.

From 24 February 2022 to 1 August 2022, IOM provided information and legal counselling to more than 6,847 people alone, including Ukrainian refugees and non-EU nationals. To compare, a total of 7,572 people used MIC's consulting services in 2021.

IOM also regularly updates the IOM MIC website dedicated to the situation in Ukraine, where relevant legislative, administrative, and other information are presented, as well as relevant contacts shared here.

This online support is available in Ukrainian / Slovak / English / Russian language.

From 24 February 2022 to 2 August 2022, the MIC website was visited by 365,266 users.
